[M]edia as “extensions of man” a means to augment our powers of perception and communication.
— Marshall McLuhan.
In my blog I will be discussing the importance of new media and exploring how it impacts the public and how technical writers utilize this source. The majority of my content will be based on new media and serve as a portfolio for for my course. My purpose for discussing new media is to better understand it and discuss its overall important to society.
My current thoughts on new media is that it is an important attribute to society because it allows for more communication and strengths innovation efforts. Likewise, new media is an important aspect of technical communication and it developed a new medium of communication for the public that older media did not offer. New media allows for more connectivity between users which allows for more social interaction on a broader platform.
I have been recently been learning and discussing how new media connects with money and politics. These connections to society have helped me to understand and learn about the value of these topics. To elaborate, the media can be influenced by corporations which interconnect with politics and therefore manipulates the way we perceive content. New media also is influenced by the past which is used to help impact the future through these outlets. Furthermore, because society has developed upon older media methods the construction of new media has been formatted for superior communication practices.
Similarly, I have learned new insights on new media from several authors whose perspectives were different but relating to the topic of new media effectively.
Manovich
His focus on new media is based on the connection with art in which he compares computer scientists to artists. Manovich believes that art provides a connection to the world through different platforms.
Murray
This standpoint had many different attributions to technical communication which were based on literary and humanistic standpoints as well as illustrating engineering aspects. Murray connects her audience to the relationship to these aspects and how they supplement growth from the prior experiences and can be recycled and recreated.
Siapera
The connection between the industry’s portrayal of corporations effects ideals towards the direction of consumers. Siapera reveals how the new media is being influenced by capitalism bias and the effect it has had on the consumer.
Review of Esasa Monts new media blog:
1. Esasa’s blog contains an entire page drawing information from our second discussion of the class. They provide information on the authors (Murray, Manovich, and Siapera) views without making it too lengthy. There is an overview of the texts as a whole as well as the unique stances which are categorized by the respective author. They also provided all the required posts with ample information on each topic going above and beyond the requirements. I found their “how-to page especially intriguing as it covered the topic of teaching abroad. Unlike other blogs—admittedly mine as well—the topic was super creative.
2. Esasa’s blog defines new media as “My definition for new media can be defined as the connection between old technology and the introduction of new technology through different aspects.” (found on their “my definition” page). The definition page also includes a plethora of information from our text mixed with personal ideas. The information provided is seamlessly integrated into the rest of the blog, as I mentioned previously the “how to” page is fantastic. Not only does it peak the viewers interest but the topic itself exemplifies what new media is and how it can be used to assist in education. They include that interview process utilizes new media “…some schools request videos or skype interviews which you need to be prepared for to make a good impression and land the job.” (“how to” page). Before new media like Skype was available a job interview had to be conducted face to face, in a scenario where teaching abroad is concerned these technologies save tons of time and money for those still state side. Esasa also included a tip for familiarizing yourself with the culture before being completely immersed: YouTube. If going overseas YouTube is a great tool, and again an example of new media. I found that their explanation of teaching abroad was a brilliant addition to the blog and showcased practical usage of new media.
3. In this review of Esasa’s blog all I’m doing is praising, but they seriously deserve it. One of the most creative and well thought out functions in the blog are the direct links to social media/YouTube at the top of each page. I personally overlooked the small icons assuming they weren’t activated but upon clicking them I was directed to relevant videos which added more depth to the information. The YouTube button for example, led directly to a video of the “21 Best Places to Teach English Abroad”. I mean COME ON, that is fantastic! It gives even more information on their “how to” topic which I’m sure you’re tired of me raving about, but its integrated seamlessly! In an age of “traditional media” something like this wouldn’t be possible. The spread of information (and the information available) was simply not possible at this level.
